Ukrainian Intermediate Course 1 is meant for students who have already taken Ukrainian Elementary Courses 1 and 2 or acquired equivalent skills elsewhere (skill level A1.2 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, CEFR).

Objectives

After Ukrainian Intermediate Course 1, students can

  • describe their home, rooms, and immediate surroundings;
    • communicate in situations related to renting accommodation;
    • use common prepositions of place and the locative case in everyday communication;
    • talk about time using months, clock times, and ordinal numbers;
    • write simple emails and short diary entries;
    • use common verbs of motion with prefixes in travel-related situations;
    • communicate in familiar everyday situations in Ukrainian.

Contents

The course continues working with the textbook Yabluko. Elementary Ukrainian. We will start by revising topics from Lessons 1–6, such as personal information, food, holidays, and essential grammar structures.

Students will learn vocabulary related to housing and home, practise using prepositions of place and the locative case, and learn to express time using months, clock times, and ordinal numbers.

Participants will read texts about architecture, personal preferences, and a tour in a Ukrainian city. They will also learn to write adverts, emails, and diary entries. Special attention will be paid to topics such as weather, time, transport, travelling in Ukraine, and verbs of motion with various prefixes.

All lessons will develop speaking, reading, writing, and listening skills, with particular emphasis on improving writing skills. Learning takes place through discussions, pair and group work, and independent assignments.

Main languages of instruction are Finnish and Ukrainian (and English if needed).

Modes of study

The course comprises 52 lessons (à 45 minutes) as well as independent work. The student workload of a 4 ECTS course is approximately 108 hours (including lessons and independent work).
