No lessons on 13.10.

We will use Zoom and Moodle platforms on the course. To participate, you will need a computer with a reliable internet connection, a microphone, and a camera. More information about Zoom and Moodle will be sent by email approximately 1 week before the course begins.

Target group

Ukrainian Advanced Course 1 is meant for students who have already completed Ukrainian Intermediate Course 4 or acquired equivalent skills elsewhere (intermediate level skills, preferably using the textbook Yabluko Intermediate Ukrainian).

The recommended language proficiency level is B1–B2. After completing the course students will gradually progress towards B2–C1.

After the Ukrainian Advanced Course 1, students:

• communicate more confidently and fluently in everyday, educational, and cultural situations, building well-structured arguments with the help of discourse markers and linking expressions;
• can introduce themselves, talk about their preferences, find Ukrainian equivalents for loanwords, justify their actions, and interact effectively in various urban situations
• can express and support their opinions on topics such as the Ukrainian language in the world, healthy diet, culture, and society
• can write different types of  texts, including a personal language improvement plan, descriptions of changes in their lives, and essays
• have increased their understanding of Ukrainian grammar: e.g. special uses of the present tense, accusative, instrumental, and locative cases; use of different prepositions with different noun cases, verb formation with prefixes, the three future tense forms, compound adverbs, prepositional constructions, dates and expressions of time, past and future tenses of perfective verbs, the use of numerals with nouns, syntax, and punctuation
• can understand and analyse authentic texts related to the history of the Ukrainian language, culture, society, healthy diet, and contemporary life
• use a richer vocabulary, confidently choose Ukrainian equivalents for borrowed words, and apply more complex grammatical structures in spoken and written communication.

Contents

On Ukrainian Advanced Course 1, we will start working with the new textbook Yabluko Advanced Ukrainian (Яблуко. Вищий рівень) and study Lessons 1–3 from both the Student’s Book and Workbook.

The first lessons focus on personal identity and self-presentation, the Ukrainian language in the world, urban life, healthy diet, and modern lifestyle. Students will work with authentic texts, dialogues, audio materials, and interactive exercises reflecting contemporary Ukrainian language and culture.

The course combines systematic grammar study with the active development of communicative skills. Special attention is paid to argumentation, vocabulary expansion, working with more demanding texts, and developing both academic and creative writing skills.

During the course, students will:

• work individually, in pairs, and in groups
• participate in discussions on social and cultural topics
• complete creative and practical communication tasks
• develop speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills
• reinforce new grammatical structures through practical use
• improve their spoken and written communication skills in a variety of social and professional situations

Language of instruction is Ukrainian. Finnish and English may be used as supportive languages when necessary.

Modes of study

The course comprises 52 lessons (à 45 minutes) as well as independent work. The student workload of a 4 ECTS course is approximately 108 hours (including lessons and independent work). To pass the course, participants need to attend the lessons regularly and be active, do homework and other assignments given by the teacher.

To pass the course, students need to attend approximately 80 per cent of the lessons.

We use continous evaluation on the course.

The books are not included in the course fee.

Teachers' additional materials will be shared via Moodle. 

You need also a notebook to practise writing.

You will get an early bird discount of EUR10 when you enrol on this course on 16.8.2026 at the latest and pay the course fee online after filling in the enrolment form. After 16.8., the course fee will be 150 euros.
