Finnish for Beginners Refresher Course (distance learning)
Have you studied some Finnish in the past? Do you want to revise the basics? This course is meant for you!
Finnish for Beginners Refresher Course is an intensive course meant for so-called false beginners. We will practise key expressions needed in everyday life.
Time
Online course 25.1.–22.3.2025 on Saturdays at 9.00–11.15
No lessons on 1.3.
We will use Zoom and Moodle platforms. To participate, you will need a computer with a reliable internet connection, a microphone, and a camera. More information about the platforms will be sent by email approximately 1 week before the 1st lesson.
Target group
The course is meant for people who have studied some Finnish in the past (so-called false beginners). You have already studied Suomen mestari 1 in full (or have studied almost the whole book), but want to revise the basics. You may have participated on our courses Finnish for Beginners 1 and Finnish for Beginners 2, or have equivalent skills.
You are also welcome to participate, if you have used another textbook. Please take a look at the themes of Suomen mestari 1 before enrolling on the course. It will help you to decide if the course is suitable for you.

Contents
We will study Finnish on the skill level A1. The aim of the course is to activate and strenthen participants' skills and proceed to the next language skill level. After the course, participants will be able to cope with basic everyday situations and will be able to talk about themselves using simple expressions.We will work independently, in pairs, and in small groups.
We will practise key expressions needed in everyday life. We will focus on spoken exercises. At the start of each lesson, the teacher will introduce the vocabulary and structures. Students can prepare in advance by studying them at home before the lesson. After the introduction, we will practise the theme with various exercises.
The textbook Suomen mestari 1 forms the core of the course. The course will cover themes from chapter 3 to chapter 9. We will cover 1 chapter on each meeting. Learning the course topics requires active participation, preparing for classes at home, and studying vocabulary.
Languages of instruction are English and Finnish.

Textbook Suomen mestari 1, Sonja Gehring and Sanni Heinzmann, Finn Lectura, new edition, chapters 3 to 9.

The book is not included in the course fee. It is available at local bookstores and libraries or can be ordered online.
Note! The book is needed on the 1st lesson.
Modes of study
The course comprises 24 lessons (à 45 min.) as well as independent work.
Each meeting will cover 1 chapter of the textbook (starting from chapter 3).
Participants need attend the lessons regularly and be active, prepare for the classes at home, and take the final exam, which will be evaluated on scale 1–5.
To pass the course, students need to attend at least 70 or 80 per cent of the lessons.
