Finnish for Beginners 3 (distance learning)

Online course 30.6.–28.7.2024 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 16.30–19.45

We use Zoom and Moodle platforms on the course. To participate, you will need a computer with a reliable internet connection, a microphone, and a camera. More information about the platforms will be sent by email approximately 1 week before the course begins.

Target group

The course is suitable for those who have reached the skill level A1.3 (on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, CEFR).

The course is also suitable for students who have taken the courses Learn Finnish 1–3 during the summer.

You have studied the textbook Suomen mestari 1 in full (chapters 1 to 9) or have equivalent skills.

After completing the course, students

can talk about past events
can discuss about health and visit a doctor
know vocabulary related to cabin life, nature, and sauna
can talk about free time and interests

Contents

On Finnish for Beginners 3, we will practise communicating about personal life and describing our immediate surroundings. We will practise Finnish by speaking, writing, and reading.

The course outline is based on the textbook Suomen mestari 2. We will study chapters 1–4. The course is intensive: students are expected to participate actively in class and do homework. Each student will prepare a small project in Finnish. An oral exam will be held at the end of the course. The target skill level is A2.1.

The language of instruction is English, but Finnish will be used when possible.

Modes of study

The course comprises 52 lessons (à 45 minutes) as well as independent work. The student workload of a 4 ECTS course is approximately 108 hours (including lessons and independent work).

To pass the course, participants need to attend the lessons regularly and be active, do homework and take the final exam. NOTE! The course is intensive.

To pass the course, students need to attend at least 70 or 80 per cent of the lessons.

The book is not included in the course fee. It is available at local bookstores and libraries or can be ordered online. Note! You will need the book on the 1st lesson. Each participant will need their own book.

It is also recommended to bring a dictionary to the lessons.

Teacher’s own materials will be used as well.
