Time
Online course 19.5.–27.8.2026 on Tuesdays and Thursday at 16.30–18.30
except on the following weeks:
week 22: lessons on Tue 26.5. and Wed 27.5.
week 25: lessons on Tue 16.6.and Wed 17.6.
We will use Zoom and Moodle platforms on the course. To participate, you will need a computer with an reliable internet connection, a microphone, and a camera. You will get more information about the platforms approximately 1 week before the course starts.
Target group
Chinese Elementary Course 1 is meant for people who have not studied Chinese previously. People who speak Mandarin Chinese as their native tongue cannot participate on the course.
Aim
Skill level A1 (on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, CEFR)
After completing Chinese Elementary I, the students have gained an overview of Chinese and are able to
- communicate in easy and simple everyday situations (for example greeting someone, saying goodbye, introducing themselves and shopping)
- use expressions that are necessary in everyday conversations
- answer questions and tell about themselves
- read simple texts with the help of pinyin system and recognize some characters without pinyin
- write simple characters.
Contents
During the course, the students will do tasks that are related to everyday life: listening comprehension, grammar, pronunciation and conversation exercises. The languages of tuition are English and Chinese, with Finnish used as a support language when necessary.

The book is not included in the course fee. More information about the book will be sent by email and it will also be available in Moodle.
Modes of study
60 lessons. Active participation in class and taking the final exam, which will be evaluated on scale 1-5.
To pass the course, the student will need to attend at least 80 per cent of the lessons.
