English for Working Life 1 (level B1–B2) - contact learning
Do you want to improve your confidence to use English at work?
This course gives you the opportunity to develop and polish your English language skills in workplace contexts.
The course is meant for people with B1 or B2 level skills in English (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, CEFR). The aim is to strengthen your English skills and give you tools to navigate in diverse working life situations.

Target group
People with B1 or B2 level skills in English, who want to improve their professional English language skills.
Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
Objectives
The focus of the course is on professional English language skills. The aim is to increase participants’ English language proficiency, gain new communication skills, and develop strategies for workplace and business environments. You will gain skills and confidence needed in international business and global working life.
Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be able to:
- communicate more effectively in English in different workplace situations
- use formal and informal language in appropriate contexts
- use different learning strategies to study independently
Contents
We will study business English vocabulary and workplace phrases. We will also revise and study grammar.
The course is based on the textbook Work Matters – English for Working Life (Arjopalo et al.), chapters 1–5. Other materials will be used as well.
Topics will include, for example:
- introductions: introducing yourself and your company
- job interviews
- formal and informal communication
- communication strategies
- emails
- telephone English
- small talk
Modes of study
30 lessons (à 45 minutes) as well as independent work. The student workload of 2 ECTS course is approximately 54 hours (including tuition and independent work).
To pass the course, participants need to attend the lessons regularly and be active, complete the assignments given during the course, and do homework.
Evaluation: Pass/Fail
We use continuous evaluation on the course (no end-of-the-course test).

The book is not included in the basic course fee (125 €). You can also choose an option that includes the course fee and the book (170 €). If you order the book from us, you will get it from the teacher on the 1st lesson.
You can also buy or borrow the book yourself. NOTE! The book will be needed for the 1st lesson, so please get the book before the course starts.
