Next course 8.2.2027–12.4.2028
Study in the Nordic countries’ only international Behaviour-Analytic Animal Training Programme!
Designed for students from around the world, the programme combines a strong scientific and theoretical foundation with practical, hands-on learning. You will develop evidence-based expertise in animal learning and training while gaining the skills needed to collaborate effectively in multidisciplinary professional environments. Graduates are well prepared for careers in animal training, welfare, and other fields where behavioural science and professional teamwork are essential.
Content
This international training programme is more than a qualification — it is designed to transform the future of animal training through science of learning, creativity, and professional excellence. As the only international behaviour-analytic animal training programme in the Nordic countries, this unique educational experience equips you with the knowledge, skills, and professional identity needed to create lasting positive change for animals and the people who care for them.
Through the programme, you will:

The training programme is designed for those who work with animals or are actively involved in animal-related activities, including:
Theoretical and methodological studies, 10 ECTS (80 hours in total, of which 32 hours of contact teaching and 48 hours of online teaching)
Methods of behaviour change and application of interventions, 10 ECTS (80 hours in total, of which 32 hours of contact teaching and 48 hours of online teaching)
Final Thesis Project and Supervision, 10 ECTS (80 hours in total, of which 48 hours of contact teaching and 32 hours of online teaching)
Applied Learning and Professional Development Activities (completed between teaching sessions). Throughout the programme, students engage in individual and group assignments that support the application of theoretical knowledge to professional practice. These tasks promote critical thinking, reflection, peer learning, and the development of practical competencies in behaviour analysis and animal training.
Upon completion of the programme, you will be able to evaluate and select appropriate training methods for a variety of situations using relevant analytical frameworks. You will understand the strengths and applications of different approaches to behaviour change in both animals and humans.
The programme also strengthens your ability to observe and analyse animal behaviour from a learning perspective and to integrate learning principles with considerations of animal welfare. You will develop the skills needed to interpret and apply scientific research findings, assess their relevance to professional practice, and recognise the potential of behaviour analysis in both animal training and research.
This training programme aims to develop your ability to apply scientific knowledge and evidence-based methods in animal training across species and professional contexts. The programme emphasises the practical application of behaviour-analytic principles in training animals and in guiding and supporting people who work with them, such as pet owners, animal care professionals, and fellow trainers.
In addition, the programme promotes ethical and professional competence in animal training. You will learn to apply ethical principles in your work with animals and people, and to operate effectively in multidisciplinary professional environments.
To successfully complete the programme and be awarded the certificate, participants must meet the following requirements:
Assessment is based on participants’ achievement of the programme learning outcomes through attendance, participation, assignments, and the successful completion of the thesis project.
Following Eduardo J. Fernandez’s (2024) article on the LIFE model for ethical animal training practices, animal training procedures have undergone drastic changes in the last few decades, with a shift toward reward-based training methods. These reward-based practices have also been directly impacted by the behavioural and animal welfare sciences. These recent changes have led to a definition of success in animal training that goes beyond being effective. By connecting established terminology, behavioural principles, and training practices, we can promote optimal welfare for the animals under our care and in our lives.
Additionally, we are truly excited that the international scientific community now has a new platform in form of the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis in Animal Training. See more: https://jabaat.org.

Jirka Vierimaa
M.Soc.Sc., Expert in Behaviour Analysis, Doctoral Researcher, Professional Animal Trainer
In this programme, Jirka works as Programme Director.
Since 2008, Jirka has worked professionally with more than 10,000 dogs and nearly 30 species of animals across a wide range of training and working environments. His work combines extensive hands-on experience with academic research, with a particular interest in ethical, creative, and functionally effective animal training.
Jirka’s research and teaching focus on multispecies interaction — especially the ways humans and other animals work, communicate, and shape shared environments together. He has studied human–dog working dyads across Europe in diverse professional settings, contributing to the development of the field toward a broader understanding of multispecies wellbeing.
Alongside his research and professional practice, Jirka has studied university pedagogy and has extensive experience teaching, mentoring, and collaborating in multidisciplinary and multi-professional animal work contexts.
In 2017, Jirka co-founded the Finnish behaviour-analytic animal trainer education programme at Tampere University, where he has served as a lead instructor and curriculum developer.
